An Old Face in Brand-New City

The hilarious Yogyakarta palace hid a never-ended story. About its location which is in line with Merapi mountain in north and Samudra Indonesia in south. Many arguments comes out about Yogyakarta palace, both logic and mystique. Logically, it was about the contour of the ground and etc. However, there was a beliefe that the three spiritual powers are linked each other.
The well-known Yogyakarta palace neighbourhood isn’t about who lived there or it become the central administration of the city, there is a story beyond it where culture is maintained to be cultural heritage to attract local and domestic tourists. It is not only an old object but also tembang jawa, wayang kulit, and etc.

The story of Yogyakarta palace began in 1755, when the first palace was built under the reign of Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat palace era. Yogyakarta palace is a result of giyanti pact, where Mataram palace that located in Kartasura divided into two parts, Yogyakarta and Surakarta or Solo.

Although, the palace building still charismatic but the fact that everything is changed cannot be denied. Now, Yogyakarta palace becomes the icon of the city that attract tourists.
Yogyakarta, now, becomes a heterogenic city. There are acculturation between native culture and modern culture.  It cannot be denied that modernization and globalization makes Yogyakarta evolve to modern city. It can be seen from the landscape of Yogyakarta such as malioboro, tugu yogyakarta, and soon already filled with modernization. Eventhought, there are modernization here and there, Yogyakarta palace still hold the old tradition. Capitalism isn’t a big deal for the palace. Economic value that become the benchmark of humans’ life can be defeated by noble value and tradition.

However, “Abdi Dalem” not only works there, they have a job out of the palace. So, become “Abdi Dalem” is about faith to serve the palace and the king.

There are thousands of them, with different types of duty in scheduled time. Most of them are old. However, this is the unique story about “Abdi Dalem” they will serves the palace and the king until dead or they cannot stand anymore.
