KOMODO ISLAND - East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

Komodo Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.

Do you want to see and get close with ‘the dragons’ from Indonesia?

Well.. I’d suggest you to not get too close with this ‘dragon’ though.

You may see it but just avoid to be licked by it.
This dragon from Indonesia name is Komodo.

Komodo Island is particularly notable as the home to the Komodo dragons (giant lizards).
Komodo National Park is located in the center of the Indonesian archipelago, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. The Park was declared a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Around 2,500 lizards live together with the people in the island.

Obviously, due to the large number of lizards living in the island, thus makes Komodo becomes the most remarkable icon of the island. Perhaps later when Indonesia is selected as the host of the next World Cup, Komodo will be the mascot of it instead of Garuda.

If you want to go to this place, be sure to save up some money because you will spend quite a lot of money here.

Now.. let me give you alternative ways to go there :

1. Aviation

If you go from Jakarta, you need to transit in Bali then continue to Labuan Bajo (it takes about 30 minutes from Bali using the local airplane)

There are some airplanes with Jakarta-Bali-Kupang routes :

  • Merpati Airlines
  • GT Air, and
  • Trans Nusa

You may spend for about 1,000,000 IDR in one go and it may takes for about 90 minutes.

2. Land

You can use Bus for road transportation. It takes for about 24 until 27 hours from Bali to Jakarta and it costs for about 400,000IDR.

If you start from Denpasar, Bali just go directly to the city terminal then look for bus to Labuan Bajo and Bima lines.

3. Water

You can start from Ngurah Rai airport in Bali then heading to Padang Bai harbour. You can also take the alternate harbour which is Amed harbour then head to Lembar harbour in Lombok by using ferry which take for about 4 hours and continue to Labuhan using the same ferry until you arrive in Alas harbour, Sumbawa.

To avoid boredom, you can take a bus to Bima, Raba. After you arrive in Bima, you can go to Sape harbour using bemo (motorized pedicab) then use another ferry with Labuhan Bajo as the destination. When you have arrived in Labuhan Bajo, it means you’re just a meter away from Komodo Island. Well, it only takes about 4 hours to go to Komodo Island from Labuhan Bajo.

If you want to stay the night in Komodo Island, there are inns there. But the inns cost quite expensive.

Civilization

According to the legend, there are some ancient tribes who settle up in Komodo Island, one of the tribes is Komodo tribe. Most of them have a job as a fisherman.

There is a uniqueness of the island, the people and the giant
lizards live together in the island without harrassing each other. They live in harmony and peace. :P
